Myth 4: EV’s are Heavy

Welcome back to Myth-busting May, where today we are going to bust the myth that EV’s are heavy or much heavier than gasoline powered vehicles.
Here are the facts. In 2024, the top-selling vehicle in the US was the Ford F-Series truck. Ford sold over 732,100 units of the F-Series last year. In comparison, the best selling EV in 2024 in the USA was the Tesla Model Y, with 405,900 units. The Model Y was the 4th most popular vehicle sold in the US in 2024. And the only EV in the top 10.
Here’s where it gets interesting. According to Ford, the average Ford F-150 weight ranges from 4021, to 5,540 pounds. The average Ford F-250 weighs 5,677 to 7,538 pounds and the Ford F350 weighs between 5,854 to 8,587 pounds. While the Tesla Model Y weighs between 4,154 to 4,416 pounds, considerably less than most of the Ford F-series trucks.
Now the Y series does weigh more than the second most popular vehicle in America- the Toyota Rav-4 (3,380 to 3,690 pounds),and the 3rd best selling the Honda CR-V (3,472 to 3,926 pounds) but less than the Chevy Silverado – (4,400 to 5,620 pounds).
So, it doesn’t seem like the Tesla Model Y weight was anything other than the average within the parameters of the top 10 vehicles sold. In fact, in was right in the middle:
Ranking | Make and Model | Curb Weight |
---|---|---|
1 | Ford F-Series | 4,021 to 8,587 lbs. |
2 | Toyota RAV4 | 3,380 to 3,690 lbs. |
3 | Honda CR-V | 3,472 to 3,926 lbs. |
4 | Tesla Model Y | 4,154 to 4,416lbs. |
5 | Chevy Silverado | 4,400 to 5,620 lbs. |
6 | Toyota Camry | 3,310 to 3,575 lbs. |
7 | Honda Civic | 2,877 to 3,036 lbs. |
8 | Nissan Rogue | 3,657 lbs. |
9 | Ram Pickup | 4,753 to 6,440 lbs. |
10 | GMC Sierra | 4,440 to 5,89 lbs. |
To summarize, in the top 10 vehicles sold in America in 2024, 9 were gasoline cars, only one was an EV. The Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, Ram Pickup and GMC Sierra all weigh more on average than the Tesla Model Y. And in many cases, they weigh A LOT more. A Ford F350 can weigh TWICE as much as a Tesla Model Y.
